Eastern Market has continually served the Capitol Hill community with seven days-a-week produce, meat, cheese and bakery vendors, a weekend farmers market and craft sales while also operating as an informal community center.
On April 30, 2007, a fire blazed through the market causing extensive damage and displacing 14 vendors. More than 400 DC Firefighters responded and their efforts allowed the fire to be contained saving aspects of the Market which would have otherwise been destroyed and allowing for it to be restored.
Mayor Adrian Fenty and the City Council have committed to restoring Eastern Market and rebuilding efforts are currently underway with the Market scheduled to re-open in 2009. Renovations to the building will include ADA entrances, new HVAC, bathrooms, windows, flooring, fire sprinklers and lighting.
The Market remains open for business during the renovation period.
