Green Buildings

Green Buildings

Green buildings maximize energy savings, improve water efficiency, reduce carbon dioxide emissions, improve indoor environmental quality, utilize sustainable building materials and create healthy environments for District employees and visitors.

It's the Law

The Green Building Act of 2006* establishes the framework for the District to meet the US Green Building Council's LEED certification standards for environmental performance. LEED is a third-party certification program established by the US Green Building Council, which serves as a nationally accepted benchmark for the design, construction and operation of high-performance green buildings.

Guidebooks and Resources

The District has released a LEED Certification Guidebook to assist District Government project managers in complying with LEED standards and achieving the highest possible LEED certification.

Green DC Agenda

The Mayor has also released a Green DC agenda and includes a webpage solely dedicated to green buildings. There are additional helpful links and resources available on the DRES webpage.

The District is installing new technology and utilizing Federal stimulus money to renovate and improve the energy efficiency of District buildings.  In addition, several new construction projects are tracking LEED Silver certification or higher.  These projects include:
