| Case Studies
The Department of Real Estate Services has developed several case studies that serve as valuable tools to share what the agency has done to support District services. These case studies demonstrate the agency’s commitment to completing projects on time and on budget.
Presidential Inaugural Stands*: The District has the responsibility to construct the President's, media's and District’s viewing stands for the Presidential Inauguration every four years. DRES has assumed this responsibility since 1964.
Inauguration 2009 Security*: The DRES Protective Services Division (PSD) played a leading role in the District’s security preparations for the 2009 presidential inauguration. This was the first time PSD played a major law enforcement role during an inauguration.
Renovation of Reeves Center 3rd and 4th Floors for the Office of Planning*: To meet the District’s mandate to reduce leased space and maximize owned space, DRES conducted a programming exercise and produced a Test-Fit Plan that outlined the agency’s current and projected staffing levels, services performed and space required.
District Warehouse Clean-up*: DRES currently manages eleven leased and owned warehouses on behalf of various District agencies. Spurred by requests for warehouse space that could not be met, DRES recognized the need to maximize occupied space.
Build-out at DC General for the Department of Consumer and Regulatory Affairs*: DRES ended leases at 25 M Street, NE and 1100 U Street, SE in April 2008 to meet the District’s mandate to reduce leased space and maximize owned space. By ending two leases and utilizing owned space, the District is saving over $850,000 annually in lease costs.
Constructing the New Beginnings Youth Development Center*: In February 2009, DRES substantially completed a state-of-the-art youth rehabilitation facility, modeled after Missouri’s secure juvenile facilities: noted as the best juvenile rehabilitation system in the nation. New Beginnings welcomed its first students in May 2009.
